Have You Got the “Internet Marketing Blues”? Here’s How to Get on the Fast Track

In Applause, Friends, Jeff Dedrick, Message, Online Marketing
0

Hello Fellow Reader,

Did you know that according to the World Internet Usage and Population Data that as of there were approximately 1,262,032,697 online as of November 2007?

Stop and think about those numbers for a minute!  There are more than 2 billion people online right now…that’s pretty amazing, isn’t it?

Now think about this for a minute…of those more than two billion people, how many of them have stopped at your Website and/or purchased one of your products or services?

Pretty depressing, right?

But don’t let it get you down – because if you take the time to put together an Internet Marketing campaign, you’ll stand a much better chance of making connections with a few more of them!

Let’s start by looking at the four different stages visitors to your Website go through when they’re online.  Although they’ve been classified in different ways, the four basic stages can be described as:

Just looking

Thinking about buying

Ready to buy

Let’s start with the first one: Just Looking

People who are in this stage have something on their minds.  They want something – usually information – and they’re probably not thinking about systematic keywords, or features of a particular product or service.  They’re probably using very general one or two word searches to get more information about the niche or topic.

The best way to reach a visitor to your Website at this point in the game is simply to provide them with lots and lots of general information.  Some ways of doing that would be:

* Writing articles about the topic

* Reviewing different products or services and posting them to your Blog

* Offering a free, informative newsletter about the niche topic

* Doing weekly or monthly Podcasts

* Doing free teleseminars and interviewing experts in the industry, or arranging to be interviewed.

The main thing to remember is to provide lots of broad information.  The more questions you can answer for your visitor right now – the more they’re going to remember you as they move through the buying cycle – and the more they’re gong to perceive YOU as the expert in your industry or niche.

The Second Stage: Thinking about Buying

People who are in this stage of the buying cycle have the information they were looking for.  They understand the basics, and now they’re starting to look for reasons to justify their purchase – they want to be convinced that they need it!

Something to keep in mind is that the larger and more expensive the purchase is, the more logical reasons you’ll need to be able to give them.

So to engage visitors who are thinking about buying, you’ll want to provide easy access to all the features of your product or service.  If you’re selling cameras for example, this is where you’ll want to have lots of customer reviews, descriptions of the different benefits and features of the product and answer all the “how to” information.

For example, you’ll want to make it easy for someone to find out how they can buy your product or service, how you ship it, how much shipping costs and what your guarantee and return policy is.

You’ll want to give them the logical reasons for justifying the purchase at this point.  (But don’t forget that you need to keep showing them what your product or service is going to do for them at the same time – so be subtle, but push the benefits here too.)

By answering their “how” questions, you’ll not only continue moving them through the buying cycle, you’ll also help to guarantee that you’re the one they’re going to want to do business with, because you’ve shown them how easy – and secure – you’ve made the buying process.

The Third Stage: Ready to Buy

If you’ve done your job right, the people who are ready to buy will move quickly and smoothly through your sales process – and come out on the other end as something completely new – your customer!

Here’s how to attract visitors who are ready to pull out their credit cards:

You’ve answered their “what” and “how” questions and they’re feeling safe about making an informed decision.  So now you want to appeal to your visitor’s “emotional” side.

Here’s where you start piling on all the benefits and goodies and feelings of urgency!

Make sure you’re giving visitors “future pictures” to get them thinking about what your product or service is going to do for them, and how it’s going to make them feel.

Here are a couple of concrete examples:  If you’re selling lawn services, for example, you’re not really selling a greener lawn.  You’re selling pride in yourself, in your home.  Becoming the envy of all your neighbors because of your beautiful yard!
Or if you’re selling tooth whitener, you’re really not selling whiter teeth.  You’re selling sex appeal, and beauty and being instantly more attractive to the opposite sex.  You’re appealing to the person’s needs to look nice and to have people think that they care about the way they look and feel.

See how easy that is?

When you’re piling on the benefits, don’t forget to take all the risk off the buyer’s shoulders.  Offer a rock-solid guarantee – and be very clear about exactly what your guarantee is.

You’ll want to add a sense of urgency to the offer – something needs to be time – or quantity-limited.  (People hate thinking that they’re going to miss out on a bargain.)  And add enough – relevant – benefits that your visitor feels like they’d be a complete idiot to miss out on your deal.
That’s really all there is to it.  By following these simple steps, you’ll be able to turn those low-down, internet marketing blues into a “Happy Happy Joy Joy!” song as you watch visitors to your Website – and your sales – hit the high notes!

Viral Marketing Basics

Hello Fellow Reader,

Viral Marketing is one of the best ways for you to sell a product or service – in fact, it’s one of the best ways to make a lot of sales.

How?  Because thanks to the way that viral marketing works, you don’t need to have a big list, or a lot of money to put into an advertising campaign – but you can still have a huge impact.

First of all, let’s go over exactly what viral marketing is.  (According to Wikipedia, “Viral Marketing refers to marketing techniques that use preexisting social networks to produce increases in brand awareness, through self-replicating viral processes, analogous to the spread of pathological and computer viruses. It can be word-of-mouth delivered or enhanced by the network effects of the Internet. Viral marketing is a marketing phenomenon that facilitates and encourages people to pass along a marketing message voluntarily. Viral promotions may take the form of video clips, interactive Flash games, advergames, images, or even text messages.”)

But that sounds a little complicated, don’t you think?  To break it down into plain English, basically Viral Marketing is just a way of getting a bunch of people to tell other people about something you’ve created to build a buzz about your product or service.  And by passing it around to other people, it builds social proof – (because there’s a kind of implied endorsement when you send something to someone else.)  Sometimes you get lucky and the more it’s passed around the more it takes on a life of its own.

A perfect example is the “Free Hugs” video on YouTube.  It has been viewed by millions of people, and the music – a song written by a group called the “Sick Puppies.”  That video was responsible for launching their singing career – even though that was not the original intention.  That video – and the story behind it went viral and caught the attention – and the hearts – of people all over the world.  It even spawned a movement that is still going on.

Although you might not be able to pull off a viral marketing campaign that does as well as the “Free Hugs” video, if you are willing to spend a little time researching your market and your target audience, and can think outside the box, you can create a very successful viral marketing campaign of your own.

What kind of things can go viral?  Obviously videos.  (In fact, if you look at most of the “gurus” in the Internet Marketing field right now, you’ll see they’re all heavily using videos to promote their launches and create marketing  campaigns that go viral.  However, if you don’t have the desire to do videos, you can go with that old standby – the “Special Report.”   Podcasts, white papers, even case studies all have the ability to “go viral” and get a lot of people very interested in what you have to say – and sell.

To create a successful viral marketing campaign, it’s very important that you find the right mix of media, marketing and audience.  Make sure that your target audience is going to be interested in what you have to say, the way you’re saying it and how you’re bringing it to their attention.  If you get these three things right, chances are, you’ll have a winner on your hands, and your next marketing campaign will go viral too.

Ebook Sales and Marketing Tips – Want to Make Money? Give Your Ebook Away!

In Applause, Friends, Jeff Dedrick, Message, Online Marketing

Hello Fellow Reader,

Okay, that sounds a little contradictory, right?  You’re probably reading this article to find out how to sell your next Ebook, and I’m telling you to give it away!

But if you’ll keep reading for a minute, you’ll find out why this could be one of the best Internet Marketing ideas you’ll ever try.

Here are 5 tips that will help you to make the biggest ROI (Return on Investment) from giving away a free Ebook.

1. Write a short Ebook about how to get the most out of an affiliate product that you’re promoting.  Or choose another subject that fits a particular product. Put the link to the product inside the Ebook.  Make sure that the information in your Ebook is both interesting and valuable to the reader.

2. Contact the person whose affiliate product you’re going to be promoting and offer it to him/her to give away to his list.

3. Contact newsletter publishers and offer to let them give the Ebook away to members of their lists. (Of course, you’re going to send everyone to your squeeze page, right?)

4. Put the link to your squeeze page at the bottom of your email signature and on your signature at forums, blogs you post on, etc.

5. Set up JV partnerships with other people who are promoting similar – but not competing products or services and give them the chance to give away your Ebook.

Here are some other ideas to keep in mind when writing your Ebook so that it is perceived as valuable by your target audience and your JV partners.

• Use screenshots, graphics or photos so you’re not only telling your readers “what” to do, but they can see “how” to do it also.

• If you’re not a writer, you can hire someone else to ghostwrite it for you. (Just a hint, don’t only go for the cheapest price – otherwise you may as well write it yourself, because the quality will probably be about the same.)

• Have someone go through it to check for grammar and spelling mistakes.

• Read it out loud to check that it makes sense and flows smoothly.

• If you’re handy with graphics editing software, create a cover for your Ebook.  People will see it as more valuable if it looks like a “real” book.  If you’re not handy, you can always outsource that.

• People don’t want to read 50 or 60 page reports – everyone is pressed for time. Keep your Ebook short – between 13 and 18 pages is just about ideal. Get rid of the fluff and cut right to the heart of the information that you’re giving away.

• Put the link to your affiliate product in a several different places throughout the book. You never know what one idea is going to spark someone’s interest or overcome their last objection and be the deciding factor in them buying your affiliate product.

• Because your Ebook may go viral (which is the idea) and get passed around in ways you never imagined, put a signup box or link to your squeeze page in the book, to grab new subscribers.

As you can see, sometimes giving something of value away for free is one of the best ways for you to make money.  This is one of the best-kept secrets of successful affiliate marketers.  Follow it, and you’ll soon see your success on the rise as well.

Are You Making These Top Three Affiliate Marketing Mistakes?

In Applause, Friends, Jeff Dedrick, Message, Online Marketing, Testimonials
1

Hello Fellow Reader,

If you’re new to affiliate marketing, there are a few things that you need to know about marketing your affiliate products – because if you get these wrong, chances are, you’re never going to make more than a few sales.

Affiliate Marketing Mistake #1: Choosing the Wrong Product

This is a biggie, and probably one of the biggest mistakes that new affiliate marketers make.  How do you choose the best affiliate products?

There are several ways.  You could choose products based on their popularity (check out clickbank to see what I mean.)  Or you could choose products based around your current business.  (For example, if you run a business such as a beauty parlor, you could find a number of affiliate products…what about a book on hairstyles for weddings, or proms or braids?  Or you could sell a beauty book, or a book on skin care.  There are also physical products that you could sell.  The point is to look for affiliate products that complement what you’re already selling.

You could also choose affiliate products based on how much commission you’ll make – but think carefully before choosing this as your top method of deciding what products you want to sell.  Finding quality products should always be your top concern – because if the products you’re selling are garbage, the end result is that while you might make sales, you’re also going to get lots of refund requests – which means you’ll end up in the hole.

Affiliate Marketing Mistake #2: Marketing the Product the Wrong Way

We’ve all seen the ads that say “Make a Million Dollars with No Product and No Website” – those ads are usually about affiliate marketing.

But think about it for a minute.  If you could REALLY do that – wouldn’t everybody be doing it?  That old saying that “if something sounds too good to be true then it probably is” holds true when it comes to affiliate marketing.

The best way to market any affiliate product is to sell it where the customers are.  Which means that you need to know who your prospective customers are.  You need to find out as much information about them as possible – what they want, what their greatest fears are, what solution they’re looking for.  Then you need to know where they shop – if your affiliate marketing product is for consumers, then you’ll want to know where your prospect shops, what magazines they read or what Internet pages they visit.  Where do they hang out?  If you’re selling to business owners, then you’ll have to find out where they do business at.  And again, market your affiliate products there.

Affiliate Marketing Mistake #3: Not Writing the Right Kind of Sales Copy

Although it’s not absolutely necessary to hire a professional copywriter (especially if you’re just starting out and money is tight), it is necessary that you learn the basics about copywriting and write sales copy that will appeal to your market.

One of the first things you need to do is to “Continue the conversation that your prospect is already having inside their head.  That means that you need to know what kind of questions your prospect has about your affiliate product – and make sure that you’re answering them.  Think about what kinds of objections your prospect might have, and find a way of answering them, too.

Add social proof. (This means you want to show that other people have bought the product and love it.)  When you’re selling affiliate products, the really good marketers will provide you with testimonies that you can use, along with sales copy, email copy, etc.  (This is great because it’s often been written by a professional copywriter who understands the market.)

However, even if you’re given a sales page or email blasts to send out to your list, you don’t want to use it word for word.  Make a few changes it – give it your own original touch.  Make it fresh and original so that your prospect doesn’t see the exact same ad somewhere else – you’ll lose credibility if that happens.

If you’re offering a bonus for someone to buy your affiliate product, make sure that the bonus goes along with the product. Don’t give away recipes if you’re selling a book about hair care.  Make sure your bonus relates to the product and is useful to your prospect.  (For example, you could write your own Ebook that tells how to get the most out of the affiliate product.  That’s something that no one else will be able to sell, because it’s yours.

Whatever you do, when it comes to affiliate marketing, it’s easy to avoid making the three biggest marketing mistakes just by doing a little thinking and strategic planning before you get started.  And the truth is, you can make a very good living just from selling affiliate products, as long as you do it the right way.  Good luck!

And the Buzz Goes On – How to Use Viral Marketing

In Applause, Friends, Jeff Dedrick, Message, Testimonials
2

Hello Fellow Reader,

Before we get into the meat and potatoes of how you can use viral marketing to help get a buzz going about your small business, let’s start with a definition of exactly what “viral marketing” means.

According to the Wikipedia, “Viral marketing and viral advertising refer to marketing techniques that use preexisting social networks to produce increases in brand awareness, through self-replicating viral processes, analogous to the spread of pathological and computer viruses. It can be word-of-mouth delivered or enhanced by the network effects of the Internet. Viral marketing is a marketing phenomenon that facilitates and encourages people to pass along a marketing message voluntarily. Viral promotions may take the form of video clips, interactive Flash games, advergames, images, or even text messages.”

If you’ve ever had a hotmail, yahoo or G-mail account, you’ve participated in a viral marketing campaign every time you sent an email to someone – because the company inserted a small (and usually discreet advertisement) at the bottom of all of your outgoing emails – inviting the people you were communicating with to receive their own free email account.

So how can you put a viral marketing campaign together for your own business – and more importantly, do you even want to?

Let me answer that second question first, okay?  YES! You definitely want to take the time to brainstorm your own viral marketing campaign – even if you don’t someday want to be as big as hotmail, yahoo or Gmail.

Why?  Because according to a recent survey done by Forrester Research, people are almost 65% more likely to trust a review posted by a peer – or even a complete stranger – than they are to trust the marketing or sales information put out by the company.

Don’t believe me?  Check out Amazon.com and I-tunes.  Why is this the case?   Because as consumers we tend to think that the average “Joe Blow” has less of a personal agenda when posting his review about the latest “Dixie Chicks” album and so we give it more weight.

And, by the way, this is a normal reaction – it’s one that’s kind of hard-wired into all of us.  People have always shared the things they like – or hate – with their friends and family members.  Back in the 50′s and 60′s, our grandparents used to talk to their neighbors over the “back fence,” call each other on the phone or tell their friends during lunch.  The difference is, these days we use the Internet and cell phones.

What’s interesting though, is that with the popularity of the Internet, our trust – and believe in “social proof” – has become even stronger.

By creating your own viral marketing campaign, you’ll be doing more than getting the word out about your new affiliate product.  You’ll be gathering social proof – and that will help your sales to go through the roof.

So how do you set up your own viral marketing campaign?  The first thing to do is to get back to the basics.

Here’s the real “secret” to making a lot of money with affiliate products.  Have the right product, with the right message to the right people in the right time.

So start with your affiliate product.  Make sure that there’s a hungry audience for whatever you’re selling.

Then make sure that you’re sending out the right message – an in the right way.  If you’re marketing a product to teens, you’ll want to make sure that it’s something they want – and you’ll have to reach them where they’re hanging out.  That might be on MySpace, twitter or even Friendster.

What’s the right message?  Maybe it’s a special report.  But it could just as easily be a video.  Or an audio mp3 file.  Match your message to your audience.  And finally, make sure that you’re getting your message out at the right time – when your audience is ready to buy it.

Make your viral marketing campaign stand out from the crowd – because that’s how it’s going to get passed around and become viral.  By understanding the basics – who your audience is, what they want, how they want to get it and when they want it – all you have to do next is to create something that your audience loves – or hates – or finds interesting enough – to pass around to their friends.  And because your product comes with an implied endorsement – social proof – those people will pass it around to other people – and the buzz goes on…and on…and on…and you’ll start hearing the “ka-ching!” of your cash register going off a lot more often.

Affiliate Marketing Basics: Let’s Talk About Traffic

In Applause, Friends, Jeff Dedrick, Message, Testimonials
1

Hello Fellow Reader,

When you’re just getting starting in Affiliate Marketing, one of the most important things you need to learn about is traffic – specifically what it is and how to get it.

Why?

Because although it’s become somewhat of a cliche these days, the truth is, “the money is in the list” – but that means YOUR list, not the list of the people whose products you’re selling – at least not if you want to be successful.

Here’s why.  As an affiliate, your job is to find people who want to buy the products you’re promoting, right?  So to do that, you need to write an ad (or hire a copywriter to write it for you), and send people to a Website where they can buy the product.

BUT – there’s a serious problem with using this method.  Do you see what it is?

Anywhere from 60 to 95% of the people you send to the sales page probably aren’t going to buy the first time.

1. Most people want to be certain that they’re making the right decision, so they usually need to see or hear from you between 5 to 12 times before making a buying decision.

2. If you’re paying for the ad and sending people to the seller’s Website, the ones who don’t buy disappear forever. (And neither you nor the seller will benefit.)

3. Of those who do buy, if you’re only sending them to the sales page, YOU still lose them forever because you have no way of knowing who they are.

Here’s the solution:

1. Write your ad and send prospects to a well-written squeeze page – YOUR squeeze page. (A squeeze page is a single page Website that has one purpose – to convince prospects to give you their contact information.  Squeeze pages should be simple – no flash, no links, and if you use a graphic or photo, keep it simple and make sure it relates to the purpose of the page.  How do you convince prospects to give you their contact information?  By giving them information that is what they’re expecting to find and that’s useful to them.)

2. Offer them an incentive to give you their contact information. (This could be a free report, a free newsletter, an audio or video product – just make sure it’s related to the niche or affiliate product.)

3. After they’ve opted in to your autoresponder, send them to your affiliate sales page.

4. Follow up with them on a regular basis – mixing good information, free bonuses from time to time and additional affiliate products.

Lather, rinse, repeat. (Once you’re making money from your first affiliate product, move on to the next and then the next and the next.)

The best thing about this is that you can set most of it up on your autoresponder, so you turn it into a “system” and it runs “almost” on autopilot.  (There is NO SUCH THING as a business that runs 100% on autopilot – and don’t believe anyone who tells you differently.)  Any business – real business – takes work and effort.  But by setting this system up this way, your autoresponder does the majority of the work, and you will only need to do simple updates and make sure you keep fresh information flowing.
